Scaling Growth

Facebook’s platform sparked viral growth in its early days, offering an ideal environment to experiment with apps. The apps that grew quickly, like Zodiac Photo Album, used tactics like mass tagging, which triggered notifications to millions of users. This app allowed users to tag up to 240 friends with a single click, prompting high response rates and rapid virality. However, Facebook soon shut it down after massive success. The experimentation taught a combination of art and science for growth, which was essential in mastering virality. Later, Gustaf, central to early mobile growth efforts, helped shape innovative strategies, including creative use of notifications and invitations to fuel mobile app growth—recognized as more challenging than social media growth.
