The Model Context Protocol (MCP)
MCP (Model Context Protocol) was developed to simplify integrating AI models with external tools and data. It allows models like Claude to interact seamlessly with resources, tools, and prompts, using a standardized protocol. The idea emerged from frustrations with inefficient workflows, particularly copying data between apps, and quickly gained traction after an internal hackathon. MCP’s open-source nature encourages adoption, enabling developers to create servers for diverse applications, from Slack integrations to controlling 3D printers. Initially slow to catch on, it has since gained widespread industry use. Key features include easier integrations, server management, and enhanced AI capabilities. The protocol’s future includes expanding its use with longer-running tasks, agents, and security enhancements.
